Non-Intoxicating Pain Relief

CBC interacts rather weakly with the brain's CB1 receptors, and as such it is not able to cause inebriation or psychoactivity. On the other hand, it binds strongly with the vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) and the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) (both of which are important in the perception of pain) to trigger the release of the pain-relieving anandamide endocannabinoid.

Cannabinol

Known for relieving pain, antibacterial, appetite booster, and a sedative. CBN is a breakdown product of THC. This is why older flower products will tend to have more CBN, especially when not properly stored. With time and exposure to oxygen, THC gradually breaks down into CBN.

CBN has been observed to result in greater sedation when combined with THC, and may also have anticonvulsant (anti-seizure), anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic properties. However, this is another example of understudied plant cannabinoid, and more work needs to be done before we can be confident in its precise effects.
 

Alpha-bisabolol is defined by a pleasant chamomile-scented floral theme. Initially mostly used in cosmetics, it has also gained relevance in medical research. Alpha-bisabolol has been demonstrated to treat bacterial infections and wounds. Alpha-Bisabolol is also a great antioxidant with anti-irritation and pain-relief properties.

Guaiol is effective against systemic inflammation, making it potent in the treatment of arthritis, cancer and fribromyalgia. It is already very popular as a therapeutic aid in the treatment of sore throat and gout.

This is the only terpene that binds with CB2 receptors. This means that it has a direct impact on the modulation of anti-inflammatory activity.

Spicy Flavored Terpene

Caryophyllene can be found in oregano, basil and rosemary. It is also present in cinnamon, black pepper and cloves. In the form of beta-caryophyllene, this terpene binds to CB-2 receptors, making it useful for anti-inflammatory purposes. Most especially within topicals and creams.

Recent studies have also highlighted the efficacy of caryophyllene in assisting with alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Humulene can be found in cloves, sage and black pepper alongside hemp. Reported to have an earthy aroma dotted with spicy notes. A very effective terpene, humulene has been found to possess anti-proliferative effects relevant for cancer treatment.

There is also presence of anti-inflammatory properties. Another useful function is its role in stimulating satiety, making it effective in dieting and as a weight loss tool.

Nerolidol, or trans-nerolidol, is a terpene found in many strong aromatic plants such as jasmine, tea tree, and lemongrass, and can also be found in some cannabis strains. Researchers have found evidence that nerolidol has sedative, anti-anxiety, antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, anti-oxidant, and pain-relieving properties.

Some evidence also points to nerolidol’s ability to calm anxiety. One study found it to be the terpene most associated with cannabis strains rated high for reducing anxiety, suggesting it may play a role in cannabis’ calming abilities. 

Hemp-based strains are CBD-dominant. With CBD dominant strains, users experience fewer psychoactive effects. However, some CBD dominant strains also contain significant amounts of THC that may lead to entourage effect. Entourage effect is the interaction between phytocannabinoids and terpenes. Research shows that CBD+THC creates the entourage effect, which is more effective than take CBD or THC alone.
