CBN vs CBD
Two compounds that get compared constantly and confused almost as often. Here is the structural difference, where each one comes from, and what our own lab reports measure for each.
Updated September 3, 2026 · figures recomputed from the live catalogue.
The structural difference
CBN
CBN is not produced directly by the plant in meaningful quantity. It appears as THC oxidises over time, which is why older material tends to carry more of it. A rising CBN figure alongside a falling THC figure is a signature of age rather than of cultivar.
CBD
CBD is produced by decarboxylation of CBDA, which the plant synthesises from CBGA. It is the cannabinoid hemp cultivars are most commonly bred to maximise.
What that means on a label
Because CBN accumulates through degradation, it is a useful read on how fresh a batch is. Compare the CBN figure against the COA date rather than treating it as a headline number.
CBD content is the headline figure on most hemp products, but it says nothing about the rest of the profile. Read it alongside the minor cannabinoids to understand what you are actually buying.
Side by side, as measured
| Products detected | Lowest | Average | Highest | Labs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CBN | 65 | 0.001% | 0.273% | 2.96% | 19 |
| CBD | 187 | 0.001% | 3.697% | 28.395% | 25 |
These are catalogue ranges, not a controlled comparison. Product form moves these numbers more than the compound does, which is exactly why a single certificate tells you more than any average.

Common questions
What is the difference between CBN and CBD?
CBN is formed when THC degrades. Its presence is largely a function of age, heat and oxygen exposure. CBD is the most abundant non-intoxicating cannabinoid in hemp. They are distinct molecules and a certificate of analysis reports them separately.
Is CBN stronger than CBD?
Measured content is the only comparison we can make from lab data. In this catalogue CBN shows 0.001% to 2.96% across 65 products, and CBD shows 0.001% to 28.395% across 187 products. Those ranges reflect product form as much as the compound, so compare individual certificates rather than category averages.
How is CBN formed compared with CBD?
CBN is not produced directly by the plant in meaningful quantity. It appears as THC oxidises over time, which is why older material tends to carry more of it. A rising CBN figure alongside a falling THC figure is a signature of age rather than of cultivar. By contrast, cBD is produced by decarboxylation of CBDA, which the plant synthesises from CBGA. It is the cannabinoid hemp cultivars are most commonly bred to maximise.
Which one does hemp law actually measure?
Federal hemp law is written around Delta-9 THC, with newer language using Total THC, which adds the THCA that converts on heating. Other cannabinoids are treated separately and state by state, so check the position where you are.
